CAREERS OVERVIEW

MHCHS Careers Policy 2023 incl PAL

Mill Hill County High School is committed to providing all students in Years 7-13 with a programme of events and supporting activities to provide them with information and guidance about career opportunities and employment.  We are committed to meeting national and local expectations in relation to careers by working towards meeting the Gatsby benchmarks of Good Career Guidance which are:

A stable careers programme

Learning from career and labour market information

Addressing the needs of each pupil

Linking curriculum learning to careers

Encounters with employers and employees

Experiences of workplaces

Encounters with further and higher education

Personal guidance

The current careers programme is delivered through a combination of methods, including PSCHE, Form Time, subject lessons, competitions, presentations, employer visits, workshops and 1:1 sessions.  An outline of some of the Careers related activities students can expect to experience is shown in the journey below. Further experiences provided by external providers may be listed on Google Classroom.

PSCHE The National Enterprise Challenge

Students partake in an enterprise challenge which focuses on building skills required for future work with a focus on understanding the different career sectors.

Job of the Month

Posters will be displayed in every year 7 form room focusing on specific jobs and their sectors to further develop knowledge about the world of work. This will be completed twice each half term with form time clips focusing on targeted careers. These careers will be spread across the breadth of careers sectors. Worksheets are completed to aid understanding and will be stored in each students Careers Folder. (My Path website)

PSHE Take Your Child to Work Day

This enables students to gain first hand experience within a workplace setting. Students will develop a greater understanding of what working life looks like and are encouraged to identify and record their own skills and competencies.

PSCHE Morrisby Careers

Students are introduced to the Morissby platform and complete an online Aspirations questionnaire which will be used to develop a subject profile.

Whole year assembly- alternatives to GCSEs

All students will attend an assembly from a local college to ensure the whole year has an opportunity to be informed about the range of educational opportunities that are non A-Level based

Throughout the year the school will host a number of speakers events with employers and or higher educational representatives targeted toward students needs.

One to One independent, impartial Careers advice. 40- minute interviews with TRIGUIDANCE

An opportunity for every student to discuss and identify their career paths based on their strengths and subject choices.

Legacy Open Evening

All internal students are invited to speak to heads of departments about A Level options or the BTEC Business and Media level 2. The Head of Careers Education is available to offer advice and guidance to students and their parents/ carers. Local colleges attend and are available to discuss vocational courses, T Levels and apprenticeships.

PSCHE: Post 16 pathways

Students will cover a session focused on post 16 pathways; this has been designed to be fully inclusive to include all the needs of our students. Barclays Life Skills focuses on setting goals and remaining aspirational students, whilst identifying specific skills which can be transferred into the workplace.

All students will attend an in-school fair which will include encounters with colleges, universities, apprenticeship providers and local employers.

Unifrog Careers and subject library

Students will explore their post 16 options after the first mock examinations. After receiving their results they will be able to utilise the Unifrog profiling tools to identify their options and to take ownership of their career pathway.

Discussion between form tutor and tutees re intended destinations after Year 11, recorded and followed up, where required

Identified students will meet with the Head of Careers after both sets of mocks to discuss their HE options or apprenticeships/ school leaver programmes. Students are supported with applications, where required.

PSCHE: Careers focus

Sessions are delivered with a focus on post 18 options, UCAS applications and learning from Career and Labour Market Information. All students are provided with a virtual Aspire booklet which provides detailed resources which target university, gap year, apprenticeships and employment.

Apprenticeship and University Fair

Every year 12 students is expected to attend this event. Students will have direct contact with universities, apprenticeship providers and employers to help shape their future career pathways.

Barnet BELs visitor talk on apprenticeships

Students are encouraged to attend a targeted apprenticeship talk. All levels of apprenticeships are explored in detail to ensure all students are informed about all post 18 pathways available to them.

The Head of Careers will visit every form to share careers support throughout the year. Students will be aware of the opportunities available to them from the beginning of the year.

Medical day

Medical applicants practice mock interviews with a panel. This targeted day further develops the skills required to successfully attend rigorous medical interviews.

Oxbridge support

Targeted mock interviews are provided to ensure our students are prepared for interviews at the most prestigious universities.

 

Oxbridge offer multiple Q&A and interview support sessions in person or online.

University open days

We recognise the importance of sharing open days and encouraging our students to visit, so that by the time they apply they have crucial first-hand experience of their potential next learning environment.

University finance talk

Delivered by a leading university advisor, this talk focuses on an overview of the financial support available, regarding tuition fees, maintenance loans, additional support and the repayment structure. This highly beneficial talk creates student financial awareness.
