The Science department at MHCHS aims to empower students to question the environment that surrounds them, and not to take everything at face value. The application of the scientific method is paramount to the development of Scientific Literacy in students of all ages. We strongly believe that a good Science education provides the foundations for a fulfilling and rewarding life.

The Department has thirteen large laboratories. All the laboratories have been designed to promote the teaching of all three Sciences from Years 7 to 11 and specialist subject teaching of Physics, Chemistry and Biology at A Level. The department is well equipped and has interactive whiteboards and projectors in all laboratories. The department has sixteen experienced teachers who are all Science subject specialists. The teaching is also supported by an experienced team of technicians.

Science is a core subject in the Curriculum for all students in Years 7 to 11. In Years 7 to 8 students follow a balanced Science course based on our own schemes of work. This course promotes the teaching of Science through investigative work. Students are encouraged to predict the outcomes of their investigation and are taught the practical skills necessary to carry them out. The content of the course builds on the students' knowledge gained at Key Stage 2. In Year 9 are introduced to GCSE.

In Years 10 and 11, all students follow the AQA Syllabi, which lead to either double GCSEs or three (Triple) Separate Science GCSEs in Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Each GCSE consists of a range of units of study that have the goal of providing students with a stimulating and challenging Science education that enables them to undertake A-levels in the Sciences at MHCHS.
