PSCHE

Back

PSCHE is a crucial part of the development of young people as it equips them with knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive, fulfilled, capable and responsible lives. PSCHE encourages them to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions and in managing their finances effectively. It also enables young people to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes, and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future.

PSCHE underpins learning across the curriculum in many ways and contributes significantly to the personal development of students. PSCHE contributes to personal development by helping young people to build their personal identities, confidence and self-esteem, make the right choices and understand what influences their decisions. It enables them to understand and accommodate difference and change, to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings.

Citizenship

Education for Citizenship equips young people with the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in public life. Citizenship encourages them to take an interest in topical and controversial issues and to engage in discussion and debate. Students learn about their rights, responsibilities, duties and freedoms and about laws, justice and democracy. They learn to take part in decision making and to play an active role in the life of their school, neighbourhoods, communities and wider society as active and global citizens.

Citizenship encourages respect for different national, religious and ethnic identities. It equips students to engage critically with and explore diverse ideas, beliefs, cultures and identities and the values we share as citizens in the UK. Students begin to understand how society has changed and is changing in the UK, Europe and the wider world.
