Sociology

"Teaching and Learning are very good." Ofsted

Sociology is the critical study of society, and the course requires students to have a keen, curious and open mind. To be successful students will need to keep up to date on important events in our society by watching and listening to the news, and reading both the broad sheets and the tabloid newspapers. Students need to be prepared to enter the class ready to discuss their analysis of events and be challenged on these.

Sociology is studied at both AS and A2 Levels.

The AS Module comprises of two units

  • Families and Households
  • Education and Sociological methods

For the A2 qualification students are expected to build on their own knowledge and study from the first year and analyse in greater depth the following three units

  • Beliefs in Society
  • Theory and methods and Crime and deviance

The students complete data response examinations for both AS and A2.

Throughout the course, students will receive extensive support and advice in how to prepare for these examinations and help in improving their academic essay writing skills.

Sociology can be taken on its own as a degree course at University. It also provides students with the crucial knowledge and understanding of society, which will help in many job areas, but in particular Law, Medicine, Media, Social Work, Teaching, Psychology, Advertising and Research.
