Description of the Specification

This course is in two main sections – the theoretical study of performance and issues in sports, and practical performance of sports.  A large section of the theory is science based and the course concentrates on its application to performance.

Type and Nature of Work Involved and Method of Assessment

AS

Unit 1 Application of Physiological & Psychological Knowledge to Improve Performance

Skeletal system, motion & movement (including force & mass), effects of exercise on circulatory & respiratory system (including practical activities leading to understanding the theory). Candidates will also study socio-cultural studies in Physical Education (PE) – PE, sport and recreation, sport and culture, provision and pursuit of excellence. (2 hour examination)

Unit 2 Performance & its Improvement through Critical Analysis

Acquiring and developing skills in practical activities, 2 practical activities from different sports types. (Performance & verbal analysis of performance coursework)

Unit 3        

a) Historical Studies in PE
Development of PE (including public school PE, recreation and sports), social and technical development, urban festivals and modern trends

b) Psychology of Sport Performance
Individual aspects (including personality & motivation), group dynamics (including teamwork & leadership), competition effects on performance (including aggression, social facilitation & attribution theory)

c) Exercise & Sport Physiology
Energy (including ATP, recovery, strength, flexibility and performance enhancement)

(2½ hour examination)

Unit 4 Improvement of Effective Performance & Critical Evaluation of Practical Activities with Synoptic Assessment

1 practical activity assessed in an open environment (Performance & verbal analysis of performance coursework)

Specific Entry Requirements:  A minimum of a grade B in Science or grade B in the subject if it was studied at GCSE.
