2008-09 Exchange: What did we do?
The arrival of the French students was such a palaver; the expected arrival time was 6pm, but they arrived at around 4.30pm instead! There were such big delays that the French students were probably fed up already!
Our first trip was to the Emirates Stadium, the home of Arsenal. We started the tour, visiting the field, changing rooms, press conference room, and director’s box, which was awesome. Everyone enjoyed the outing and then we went to the museum. We had to do a 20-Questions sheet and look around the museum (a bit tedious but we got through it!). After the hunt, we had lunch and a picture with some trophies and shirts, and proceeded to the gift shop. Hooray! There were loads of different gifts and mascots, with which an Arsenal fan would be in heaven. These even included Arsenal popcorn, lampshade and duvet cover!
On Friday night, we had a disco in the Sixth Form Block, with loads of food and drinks and loud music. “We had loads of Congo lines, loads of people tripped and it was so funny!” says Maddie Fleming, 8H. But as the night came to an end we prepared for a weekend with our partner students.
The weekend was a busy one, and, with everyone going to different places, it was our first real chance to try and communicate for a whole two days with our partners. On Sunday, some of the Yr 8 students went ice-skating with their partners at Alexandra Palace. Some of the students had never been ice-skating before, so it was a new experience for them. Although it was hard trying to communicate with our partners, we had the aid of dictionaries and sign language, and trying to talk to one another was actually quite fun!
Monday, the day we were all looking forward to; Thorpe Park!! We had a brilliant time going on all the different rides, and staring in awe at the massive ones like Colossus and Stealth. “Even though my friends loved Colossus and X – No Way Out, I preferred the safer Banana Ride.” said Eve, 8L. X – No Way Out was our favourite, I couldn’t get enough of the pitch black, high-speed backwards rollercoaster! The French students loved the theme park and we all got a chance to have fun together on the rides. By the end of the day we were all exhausted and the Exchange was coming to an end.
On Tuesday, the students went on a trip to Central London, and the next day, they left!
Even though it was a whole week, the time just flew by. Now all we have to do is wait until May when we go to France!
