Mathematics – AS & A Level

Description of the Specification
This is a modular course in which a combination of 6 Units leads to an A level, and 3 Units to an AS level. The AS award will be based on 3 Units taken in year 12 and a further three Units can be added in year 13 to qualify for the A level award.
The combination of 6 Units will lead to the following certification titles:
A level Mathematics
4 Pure Mathematics & 2 Statistics Units
A level Mathematics
4 Pure Mathematics & 2 Mechanics Units
A level Further Mathematics
(4 Units in Mechanics/Statistics) or (3 Units in Mechanics/Statistics)
(2 Units in Further Pure Mathematics) or (3 Units in Further Pure Mathematics)
Students at Mill Hill County High can therefore take either 'single' A level Mathematics (Pure Mathematics with Statistics or Mechanics) or 'double' Mathematics (A level Mathematics and A level Further Mathematics)
The subject covers the following subject Core laid down by The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) which:
- enables students to acquire knowledge and skills with confidence, satisfaction and enjoyment.
- gives students experience of mathematical activity and develop resourcefulness in solving problems.
- enables students to apply mathematics and recognise its significance to other disciplines.
- develops students’ understanding of mathematical reasoning.
- provides students with a foundation for the further study of mathematics.
Type and Nature of Work Involved
During the study of Mathematics AS/A level students will be expected to:
- Consolidate each topic as it is completed in class.
- Complete written assignments as requested.
- Complete extra practice questions after each lesson.
Method of Assessment
Each study Unit is assessed by a 1½ hour paper.
Specific Entry Requirement: A minimum of a grade A in GCSE Mathematics.
The Mathematics Department also offers AS level Statistics which is designed for those students who do not need a full A level in Mathematics but would benefit from statistical knowledge, particularly when studying at university. Please see the subject details for Statistics.
