Mathematics

"Overall, the very good teaching enables all students to achieve very well." Ofsted

Mathematics is a core subject in the curriculum for all students in Years 7 to 11. The Department ensures that students are both challenged and enjoy their lessons.

Key Stage 3 - in Years 7 to 9 students follow a balanced course, based on the national framework for teaching Mathematics, in preparation for the SATS at the end of Year 9. Emphasis is placed on both calculator and non-calculator methods, investigative and I.T. work. Students focus on the application of mental mathematical methods.

Key Stage 4 - In Years 10 and 11 students are prepared for GCSE Mathematics, in which 20% of the assessment is based on coursework tasks. Students who fail to complete the coursework cannot be entered for the written papers.

Throughout the five years, students are taught in a flexible setting system which enables them to be placed according to their attainment in Mathematics. Those students with specific difficulties in Mathematics are taught in smaller groups and receive specialist help.

A wide range of courses are available in the Sixth Form at AS and A2 level,

  • Mathematics (Pure and Mechanics)
  • Mathematics (Pure and Statistics)
  • Further Mathematics
