Description of the Specification

The examination is designed to encourage students to:

  • Develop an interest in, and enthusiasm for, the classical world;
  • Develop awareness of the continuing influence of the classical world on later times and of the similarities and differences between the classical world and later times;
  • Develop and apply analytical and evaluative skills at an appropriate level;
  • Make an informed personal response to the material studied;
  • Develop an appropriate level of competence in Latin and a sensitive and analytical approach to language generally;
  • Read, understand and appreciate the canon of Latin literature from the golden and silver ages.

Type and Nature of Work Involved

  • Vocabulary learning
  • Extension of knowledge of syntax and grammar
  • Translation of unseen prose passages
  • Translation of texts in their original form
  • Looking for meaning beneath the surface
  • Showing appreciation for an author’s style and literary techniques employed
  • Making a well-considered personal response to a text

This course will be taught collaboratively, on-line, with the Cambridge Classics Project, and with support from teaching staff and the Latin Assistant.

Method of Assessment

AS

Unit 1 - Latin Language
25% of total A2 level mark / 1½ hour examination (Two unseens, one of which will be Cicero)

Unit 2 - Latin Verse and Prose Literature
25% of total A2 level mark / 1½ hour examination (Set texts: Ovid Amores III and Cicero In Verrem II)

A2

Unit 3 - Latin Verse
25% of total A2 level mark / 2 hour examination (Set text - tbc: Virgil Aeneid IV or Propertius Elegies III, Unseen author: Ovid)

Unit 4 - Latin Prose
25% of total A2 level mark / 2 hour examination (Set text: Tacitus Annals XV, Unseen author: Caesar)

Specific Entry Requirement: A minimum of a grade A in GCSE Latin.
