"Teaching makes rigorous demands on students, emphasising good pronunciation and accuracy" Ofsted

In Year 7, all students study French. The majority of students in Years 8 and 9 then have the opportunity to study a second language, either German or Latin. In Years 10 and 11, all students continue with at least one modern foreign language to GCSE level and may continue to study two languages if they wish. The GCSE course is modular, offering a combination of coursework and terminal examinations.

French and German are both offered at AS and A' Level. The Advanced Level syllabus continues to develop the language skills acquired at GCSE and enriches students' knowledge of French and German culture, as well as extending their knowledge of social and political issues.

Language Assistants, who are native speakers, support the development of students' oral skills at both GCSE and Advanced Level by offering small group tutorials or individual support.

The emphasis in all language lessons is on developing the four skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing in the target language. The Department is extremely well resourced including a language laboratory and a satellite system for receiving French and German television channels. The use of technology to reinforce and develop their language skills has proved to be extremely motivating for students.

In order to improve their oral performance and to experience something of the culture and life of the country, all students are encouraged to spend time in France or Germany. In Years 8 to 10, students are offered the opportunity of participating in language exchanges. Senior students in Years 12 and 13 are also offered work experience placements. The school has a long-standing link with Barnet's twin-town of Chaville in France and there is a well-developed exchange with a school in Hargesheim, Germany.
