Description of the Specification
The course considers the enormous impact of ICT on society as the percentage of businesses and households connected to communication networks (such as the internet) grows, as well as developing understanding of its technical nature. It encourages students to become discerning users of ICT and provides them with the opportunity to develop a broad range of ICT skills, knowledge and understanding, which could well form a basis for progression into further learning.
Type and Nature of Work Involved
This will include study of:
- Software and hardware components of an information system
- Characteristics of standard applications software and application areas
- Spreadsheet concepts
- Relational database concepts
- Applications software used for presentation and communication of data
- The role and impact of ICT from legal, moral and social perspectives
- The systems cycle
- The design of computer-based information systems
- Networks and communications
- The practical applications of ICT
- Implementation of computer-based information systems
Method of Assessment
AS Unit 1 - Information, Systems & Applications
2 hour examination / 30% of total A level mark
AS Unit 2 - Structured ICT Tasks
Controlled Assessment / 20% of total A level mark
A2 Unit 3 - ICT Systems, Applications and Implications
2 hour examination / 30% of total A level mark
A2 Unit 4 - ICT Project
Coursework / 20% of total A level mark
Specific Entry Requirements: A minimum of a grade B in GCSE Mathematics and, if ICT was studied for GCSE, a minimum of a grade B in the subject.
