Description of the Specification

  • The course is designed to enable students to:
  • Develop an interest in, and an enthusiasm for, language learning
  • Develop understanding of the language in a variety of contexts
  • Communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in the language for a range of purposes
  • Develop awareness and understanding of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of German-speaking countries
  • Understand German spoken in a variety of contexts

Type and Nature of the Work

  • Assessment by external examination (no coursework)
  • Topic work is the main means of presenting information to students
  • Students are expected to develop their knowledge of all aspects of German life
  • They are also encouraged to go to a German-speaking country
  • A Foreign Language Assistant provides support with the development of oral work
  • Students are encouraged to work independently through the use of satellite TV, CD roms, the Internet and the Language Laboratory

The topics for AS Level: family, food, health, transport, sport, tourism, leisure, communication, technology, media.

The topics for A2 Level: integration and exclusion, law and order, unemployment, environment, science and technology, literature and the arts, political issues, heritage and history.

Unit 2 - Listening, Reading and Writing 1

Specific Entry Requirements: A minimum of grade A in GCSE German for A level or a grade B if studying AS level only.
