Description of the Specification
- The course is designed to enable students to:
- Develop an interest in, and an enthusiasm for, language learning
- Develop understanding of the language in a variety of contexts
- Communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in the language for a range of purposes
- Develop awareness and understanding of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of German-speaking countries
- Understand German spoken in a variety of contexts
Type and Nature of the Work
- Assessment by external examination (no coursework)
- Topic work is the main means of presenting information to students
- Students are expected to develop their knowledge of all aspects of German life
- They are also encouraged to go to a German-speaking country
- A Foreign Language Assistant provides support with the development of oral work
- Students are encouraged to work independently through the use of satellite TV, CD roms, the Internet and the Language Laboratory
The topics for AS Level: family, food, health, transport, sport, tourism, leisure, communication, technology, media.
The topics for A2 Level: integration and exclusion, law and order, unemployment, environment, science and technology, literature and the arts, political issues, heritage and history.

Unit 1 - Speaking: Role Play & Topic Discussion
15% of total A level mark
Unit 2 - Listening, Reading and Writing 1
35% of total A level mark
A2
Unit 3 – Speaking
15% of total A level mark
Unit 4 - Reading, Listening and Writing 2
35% of total A level mark
Specific Entry Requirements: A minimum of grade A in GCSE German for A level or a grade B if studying AS level only.
