Design & Technology

"Students enjoy their work in design and technology, showing high levels of motivation. They are confident, articulate and analytical when discussing their design proposals." Ofsted

Design and Technology is a National Curriculum subject aimed at drawing on a broad base of knowledge and skills which will lead to a "Technological Capability," allowing students to be adaptable in a rapidly changing society.

Through the investigation of carefully planned technological contexts, students will identify specific needs, generate design proposals and then plan, make and evaluate their chosen product or system.

All students study Design and Technology throughout Key Stage 3 on to GCSE at Key Stage 4. Within the subject, many challenging skill areas are introduced to the students (Food Technology, Graphics, Textiles, Resistant Materials, Control and Electronics) and at Key Stage 4, there is an opportunity to specialise in one of these areas. Students who wish to continue this subject Post 16 have the opportunity of doing this through A/AS Level "Design and Technology (product design)."

The Department has, over the years, developed an excellent reputation for links with industry, local community and for winning competitions at both Key Stage 3 and 4. In the last few years, the Department has worked hard to develop industrial and cross-curricular links.
