Description of the Specification

Candidates following this specification will study Drama from exploration through to performance.  The aims of the specification are to:

Develop students’ interest in drama and theatre as participants and informed members of an audience

Develop students knowledge and understanding of major influences in theatre

Offer a range of opportunities to develop drama and theatre skills creatively and imaginatively

Integrate the theory and practice of drama

Type and Nature of the Work Involved

A candidate is expected to:

  • Demonstrate the application of performance and/or production skills through the realisation of drama and theatre
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of practical and theoretical aspects of drama and theatre using appropriate terminology
  • Interpret plays from different periods and genres
  • Make critical and evaluative judgements of live theatre

Unit 1 - Exploration of Drama & Theatre (practical & coursework)
Analysis and practical exploration of two contrasting play texts
Evaluation of live theatre
Internally assessed / 20% of total A level mark

Unit 2 - Theatre Text in Performance (practical exam)
Monologue or duologue
Performance of a play
Externally assessed / 30% of total A level mark

A2

Unit 3 - Exploration of Dramatic Performance (practical exam)
Devised work
Internally assessed / 20% of total A level mark

Unit 4 - Theatre Text in Context
2½ hour written examination / 30% of total A level mark

Specific Entry Requirement: A minimum of a grade B if this option was studied for GCSE.
