Sixth Form: Core Curriculum
All Sixth Formers study a Core Curriculum together with Options of their choice. This ensures the best possible opportunities for both academic success and progression to Higher Education. This programme is a very important aspect of the Sixth Form curriculum. All students are expected to take every opportunity to widen their horizons and broaden their interests. In order to complement academic Options a range of activities is offered.
Tutorial
All sixth formers are members of a tutor group. Sixth formers meet daily with their form tutor. Form tutors are always available to provide support and academic guidance, either on an individual basis, or through group sessions.
There is a real focus on team building and leadership in the Sixth Form. Tutor groups are a very important aspect of this process.
Careers and Higher Education Guidance
There is a strong emphasis on careers guidance. Through careers lessons and individual interviews, students are able to assess their future prospects in terms of either employment or, as is generally the case, continuing education. As part of this structured programme of careers guidance all students will have the opportunity to benefit from work shadowing and attend university open days and Higher Education conferences.
PSCHE
All sixth form students follow a structured Personal, Social, Citizenship and Health Education (PSCHE) programme. Through the use of outside speakers, student-led discussion or other means, such as theatre in education, important health, moral and other contemporary issues are addressed.
Enrichment Studies
This programme is designed to offer opportunities for students to broaden knowledge and experience as well as improving physical, practical and presentation skills. A wide range of activities is offered, which includes: Environmental Action, Debating, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, World Challenge, Stage Management, Community Service and Modern Languages (Mandarin, Italian, Russian and Japanese).
Our Community Service programme provides opportunities both within School and in the local community. In school sixth formers are involved in many areas, for example as a member of the prefect body or as a mentor to a younger student.
All students are also encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities, such as sport, music or dance and drama productions.
Functional ICT
Universities and employers are keen that students should acquire qualifications in this area. Sixth formers have the opportunity to attend ICT lessons and sit industry standard Microsoft IT Academy Programme examinations.
Supervised Study
Individual study is a feature of all Sixth Form timetables and students are assisted in organising their own time. It is important that students develop study habits which will enable them to cope with the demands of their Sixth Form courses and beyond. Facilities for supervised study are available in both the Library and Sixth Form Centre, as well as in specialist teaching areas.
