Description of the Specification
This A level Specification builds on concepts and skills that will have been developed in GCSE Science. It presents essential principles in interesting and relevant contexts, and also emphasises both the way in which scientists work and the contributions of science to modern society.
Type and Nature of Work Involved
After studying the course, students should be able to:
- Develop essential knowledge and understanding of concepts of biology, and the skills needed for the use of these in new and changing situations
- Develop an understanding of scientific methods
- Be aware of advances in technology, including information technology, relevant to biology
- Recognise the value and responsible use of biology in society
- Show knowledge and understanding of facts, principles and concepts from different areas of biology and to make and use connections between them

Unit 1 - Biology and disease
1¼ hours examination / 16.67% of the total A level mark
Unit 2 - The variety of living organisms
1¾ hours examination / 23.33% of the total A level mark
Unit 3 - Investigative and practical skills
10% of total A level mark
A2 Unit 4 - Populations and environment
1½ hours examination / 16.67% of the total A level mark
Unit 5 - Control in cells and in organisms
2¼ hours examination / 23.33% of the total A level mark
Unit 6 - Investigative and practical skills
10% of the total A level mark
Specific Entry Requirement: At least 2 Grade As in GCSE Science
